When watching thesuper-wide Cinemascope format on a screen designed for HDTV, 33% of the projectors pixels are used to create unsightly black bars, reducing image resolution.

  • Flexible Front Projection Screen Materials   
    Stewart screens will work beautifully with a wide range of projectors. Image size and projector light output can be matched to the appropriate Stewart fabric, yielding predictable professional results. For the best image, the picture should not be viewed at angles greater than 45 percent off-axis or outside a 90-degree seating cone. The best projection results are obtained in darkened rooms, enhancing black/white contrast and picture resolution. However, there are installations such as residential media rooms, corporate boardrooms and large meeting rooms where a certain amount of ambient light will always be present.  In those cases, gray screen technology is most likely the best option. Another solution is to prevent extraneous lighting from being directed at the screen.

    Higher lumen output projectors match well with lower gain screen surfaces. Hot spot artifacts are minimized; resolution and viewing angles are increased. Projectors with lower lumen output can be augmented with a quality Stewart high gain screen. Brightness is retrieved and the image emerges even when ambient light control is not optimum. Contact your projector manufacturer for required information pertaining to image size, focal length of lens and ANSI lumen output.

    Stewart Filmscreen's front projection surfaces are available in seamless in sizes up to 40 feet by 90 feet. All are available in either fixed frame or retractable models.     Introduction

    Prismasonic anamorphic lens is a high precision optical product, which boosts the real cinematic atmosphere at your home Theater. It makes a variable horizontal expand from 1 up to 1.33* for the projected image thus supporting perfectly the constant height 2.37:1 CinemaScope setup. This special optical system is also used at every commercial movie theater. The 'pass' mode of the lens makes it possible to produce a normal wide screen picture for the 16:9 source material, without removing the lens. Also the other aspect ratios, such as 1.85:1 and 2.00:1 are possible due to the unique feature of a variable Prismasonic lens. This means that despite of the aspect of a source material, your projector always presents a constant picture height with the full panel resolution.

    Additional significant advantage is that when the conversions are done optically, there will be NO need for the horizontal masking of a 2.37:1 screen. This is due to the fact that there is NO light spill from the display panel of projector with different aspect ratios, which may be a problem if the aspect ratio processing is made electrically by a projector or scaler.


     

    HD-5000R (Remote controlled)

    The HD-5000 series models have five optical elements. The prisms of HD-5000 series have been finished by the optical glass using the highest possible specification parameters during the manufacturing process. Additionally the prisms are achromatic, which means that both prisms are made by two glass materials having different optical properties. This specific technology is a solution against the chromatic aberration (color fringing). The Optical front element FE perfectly corrects the focus of an anamorphic expand, simultaneously for all horizontal expand factors. Moreover, all the optical surfaces have multicoated anti-reflection (AR) surfaces to prevent reflections and ghosting, and to maximize the light output of the projector.

    Compared to the preceding H-FE1500 series, the HD-5000 series accepts ~20 % bigger beams. Also the achromatic prisms have been further optimized, so that there exists NO chromatic aberration in a working throw range (down to 1.5). The table stand is more professional having now the individual controls for the height and tilt adjustments.

    The operation of HD-5000R lens is very simple. The other button of remote control expands the image to 2.37:1 and the other squeezes it back to 'pass' mode. There are adjustable terminal stops for both prisms and both modes, so the tuning can be easily operated to match the different screens or setups perfectly.

    The power for the lens unit is fed by the 12 volts AC/DC adaptor. The motors are very silent, and it takes about 2 seconds to go from end to end. This speed enables you also to stop the prisms pretty accurate to the intermediate positions such as 1.85:1 or 2.00:1.

    The remote control uses 12 volts battery. It has two powerful IR leds, and can be controlled without problems even at the very largest HT rooms from the seat, via screen, back to lens unit. If one has an universal remote controller, it is possible to IR learn it.

    This lens is available in silver or black finished aluminium. As a nice feature the housing has a removable bottom plate, so cleaning the prims from both sides is possible if needed

    We have not said much about anamorphic lenses on ProjectorCentral in the past. It isn't that we don't like the concept—the theory is great. They can transform a 4:3 projector into a 16:9, and they can stretch the image of a 16:9 projector into super-widescreen Cinemascope 2.35. So there isn't anything to object to in concept.

    Unfortunately, the fact is we've never been happy with the optical performance of the anamorphic lenses we have tested. They can produce vignetting (severe dimming on the corners of the image). They can impart pin cushion, barrel, or concave geometric distortions. And even if they manage to avoid those flaws, they can still introduce a subtle oily texture to the image that makes it look like you are viewing the image through an optically impure window, which essentially you are. These are optical flaws that we'd never want to live with ourselves, so despite the growing enthusiasm for the widescreen Cinemascope 2.35 format, we've been hesitant to promote the use of anamorphic lenses for home theater.



    However, last week we lit up a projector with the Schneider Optics Cine-Digitar 1.33X anamorphic lens, and the truth changed. Simply put, this is by far the best anamorphic lens we've yet seen and the first one we'd gladly install for use in our own home theater. There is no hint of vignette effects, and geometric distortion is for all practical purposes non-existent. But most importantly, this lens is optically perfect. There is not the slightest trace of oily effects. The image on screen is as natural, clear and precise as you'd ever want. The Cine-Digitar 1.33X enhances the performance of the projector without doing anything to get in its way.

    I guess I should not be surprised. I've done a lot of large format photography over the last twenty years, and photographers who work in large format recognize Schneider Optics as one of the world's elite makers of precision optics for large format cameras. Their lenses are expensive, yes, but you get what you pay for. I use Schneider lenses exclusively on my Linhof camera for the simple reason that if I am going to get out of bed long before dawn and hike into the sand dunes of Death Valley to set up for an image at sunrise, the last thing I want is sub-optimal lenses in my pack.

    Despite knowing Schneider's reputation, I still had some doubts that anyone could make an optically precise anamorphic lens that was within reach of the home theater consumer. This one surely delivers, but it is not cheap—list price is a bit over $6,000. So it is not the type of accessory you'd normally think about adding to your $2,000 projector. But it is definitely worth adding to one of the new 1080p projectors if you are serious about top quality widescreen Cinemascope 2.35 format in your home theater.

    Keep in mind that in order for an anamorphic lens to work on a 16:9 projector, the projector needs to be able to horizontally squeeze a 2.35 movie into its native 16:9 display, so that the anamorphic lens can subsequently unsqueeze it and stretch it out to its proper aspect ratio. Not all projectors have this feature. If yours doesn't, you will need an external video processor to get it working.

    Now I must cut this short, as I am suddenly quite motivated to go out shopping for a 2.35 format screen. To be honest, I didn't think I'd ever want one until now.

    SnoMatte 100 Gain: 1.0  

    SnoMatte 100, a front projection matte-white screen surface that is formulated to meet the strictest color and white field uniformity standards. This low gain screen consists of an extremely wide viewing cone. A great choice for use in applications where edge blending is required.

    GrayMatte 70, a neutral density gray screen surface formulated for use in front projection edge blending applications. GrayMatte 70 dampens cross reflection in deeply curved or circular projection installations.

    FireHawk SST Gain: 1.0  

    FireHawk SST (Sony/Stewart Theater), a flexible front projection screen surface formulated to dramatically increase black levels, shadow detailing, and color saturation. Stewart, in collaboration with Sony Electronics designed a specialized material to optimize the performance of the Sony VPL-VW-50 projector. This new material allows for enhanced focus capabilities, particularly when matched with today’s 1080p technologies.

    Silver 3D Gain: 3.0  

    Silver 3D is a specialty fabric designed to optimize stereoscopic, two channel 3D displays. The fabric employs special metallic elements, formulated to preserve light polarization. The high gain and high contrast of the fabric helps compensate for the losses incurred when using polarization filtration technology. Silver 3D offers a wider viewing cone then competing fabrics with similar gain specifications. The open/closed ratio, otherwise known as “ratio of extinction”, of Silver 3D is the industry benchmark for front projection fabrics.

    In order to produce a high ratio of extinction, special pigmentation and binder chemistry is required. These special ingredients allow the high performance of the fabric, but have impact in the steps required to successfully handle, install, and maintain the fabric. Silver 3D is high in gain and contrast which means that any hand oil, or soil smudges will be very apparent. 

    Silver 3D is less plasticized than typical Stewart Filmscreen fabrics, a normal plasticization level is found to interfere with the measured ratio of extinction.  The binders necessary for the preservation of the optical coating are very high in molecular weight and somewhat stiff as a result. Contact Stewart Filmscreen for more details on this custom material, its applications, and recommended handling.
